It has been a challenge for teachers to uplift Filipino culture and tradition through teaching children. We have to teach our children how to develop their awareness that will poster for national identity.
In the first day, it was a development lesson since Ma’am Malou had already taught them the lesson. All I have to do was to give supplement to enhance their learning. So, I came up with Team Building activity from the Leadership Conventions I had attended.
It was a game. I let them make a tower out of limited straws and scotch tape. They make the tower as tall as they can, and as strong as it can. At the end of the activity, one out of three could not be able to make a tower. We tested which of the towers was the tallest and the strongest.
In the discussion proper, we talked about how they make the tower tall and strong. There came the integration of what I have learnt from my leadership skills. It was all about how the group decides and works altogether.
The second day, we had an appreciation lesson. I brought my laptop and speaker, and played the song ‘Pananagutan’. We sang the song and discussed what it was all about.
The next lesson has challenged my skills in drawing. I have to draw all the religious occasions in the Philippines and put some touches of crayons to make it more creative. When I showed the picture to let them identify what it the picture is, they gave their ‘Wow’ first before telling what occasion does the picture tells about.
They don’t just learn what are those religious occasions; but also what does the lesson emphasized- even though Philippines has many religious groups, Filipinos are still united.
Through teaching Makabayan particularly Sibika at Kultura, the children were able to value what cultures and traditions we cherished as Filipinos.
