Making Learning Fun and Interactive through Teaching English December 8,9,10 and 11, 2009

I never feel a nuisance about teaching Mathematics, Filipino and Makabayan. They are my favorite subjects during my basic education. Unlike English, I really never get high grades in this particular subject, not to mention those theme writing activities I never get myself involved. I hate it. Later on, when I was moving forward in my high school years, I force myself to get through; or else I will fail. I can write and talk in English although there are still errors.

But then, I realize in college that English plays a big part. It is true that practice makes things perfect. I taught myself until I learn a bit of craft in the world of English. The evidences that I really excel in English are those written and oral activities which match my instructors to give thumbs up.

Before I stepped my feet on the teaching ground, I doubt myself that I can be a best English teacher. Now, I find it somewhat interesting. I finally realize that it is simply amazing as long as you have a lot of crafts which will support your teaching strategies, you’re good in art and you’re good in understanding what are really your learners’ characteristics and needs.

The first lesson I discussed during my straight teaching was The Magical Trees. I also used a PowerPoint Presentation for this lesson to draw the attention of my students. I showed them different pictures of trees and its uses not just to the wildlife but also for us, human beings who greatly depend on trees. They feel it. I mean, they felt that they were in the forest. They learn to appreciate the beauty and importance of nature.

My cooperating teacher was admired of my strategy make the discussion of the story more interesting for the students.

The following day, my lesson was about consonant digraph. I have prepared so many board work because I know they really love reciting and doing something. I have prepared the visual aids where my pupils will again make a big WOW.

You know, one thing I love from children is how they really praise your work. When they say, “Sir James, you’re really an artist.” I have forgotten all those sleepless night. All I know, I don’t just motivate them to learn; they also motivate me to teach well.

The last day of my straight teaching was the most excellent teaching I have done throughout my in-campus practice teaching; and teaching demonstrations during my undergraduate years.

Actually, it was not my schedule to be observed by our Student Teacher Supervisor Dr. Artuz. But then, I did not worry because I am always prepared in my lesson. I never go to school without my creative visual materials; and most especially, without my creative teaching strategies.

This is how it goes. I started my discussion with a simple activity. We had chants like those movements and songs we loved to do in every start of the lesson. Since it was the last subject in the morning, the children are almost tired; so we have to stretch out those burdens.

My lesson is about finding the main idea in the paragraph. You ma be wondering that the subject matter is too complicated for a Grade 2 pupils. So, this lesson requires full effort and creativity on how you as going to let them identify the concept of finding the main idea.

I started by giving them guessing games. I have presented a group of simple sentences which describe the objects inside the guessing flip cards. Then I let my pupils write the name of the things being described by the sentences. We will check their answer by simply revealing the pictures. They loved it.

To review our previous lesson, I let them underline the consonant digraph in the each word they had written on the board.

The discussion proper, I filled it with so many exciting board works. I have shown them group of pictures, they named each pictures and identify what the pictures tell about. Next, I showed them group of words and let them identify again what the words tell about. Then, I presented group of sentences and let them identify what the sentences tell about. It was so simple and logical, yet the students are appropriately guided from simple to complex understanding of the lesson. When I discussed what the main idea is, it did not appear so complicated.

Finally, I gave them a group activity wherein they have to find the main idea of the paragraph by associating the sentences to the graphic organizer. It ended up with an assignment.

Dr. Artuz commented on for a Very Good Execution of my teaching demo. My grade was undoubtedly excellent: 4.8.

My final teaching demonstration reflects that I have learned many things from my pupils through considering their needs, backgrounds, characteristics and individual differences. It also shows that my cooperating teacher, Ma’am Yen, has taught much about improving my lesson plans, teaching styles and strategies. And of course, it means that I have improved already my personality, professional and technical skills as a student teacher.
